The old 88' extended cab Ford rattled up to the front of the impressive barn, the ramshackle trailer adding to the vibrating commotion, neither end of the rig in the most excellent of shape, but never mind that. The horses were safe inside, along with tack and other equipment, and the truck ran perfectly decent. The engine died and the driver's door squeaked painfully as Tanaya pushed it open. She tapped the side of the door with her palm as her boots hit the gravel. A whistle paraded through the air.
"C'mon, dogs. Wake up, there Karli, let's git out!"
Two dogs bounded eagerly from the dusty truck, both Border Collies; one younger, a female, the other larger and more serene, the male.
"Alright, now don't ya'll wander too far."
Tanaya slammed the door shut, breathed deep, and looked around her. All around her to the North and East were fascinating mountains; just like the ones in West Texas, except... greener. With more trees and less brittle mesquite and hazardous rocks. To the South, were the foothills, rolling on and on, downwards, lulling into gentle country. And to the East? More rolling country, perfect for a good lope. She took a deep breath of fresh mountain air; ahhh it smelled good. When she paused to listen, she could hear the creek singing it's melody, off below the barns near the mountains, she supposed. Another creek. Adelaine. Her heart ached. She closed her eyes and shook her head. No. Not again. Stop it. She shook it off and took a deep breath.
The late teen strolled to the covered gooseneck where she could see the two horses peering through the railings. RJ uttered a low nicker while Rev stomped his feet in anticipation.
"Good, good boys. I know, it's been a long haul, but I'm about to get ya'll into a turn pen alright?"
She looked past the barn to the paddocks. They were very small compared to what she was used to; the horses were used to being in a 750 acre pasture when they weren't needed. Tanaya frowned, then shrugged it off. They would get plenty of riding anyhow. And besides, the ranch she planned on sittin on soon was actually visible from the Cross Creek Ranch; they could have a larger turnout there for sure. A bit of excitment jabbed at her gut at the thought of her own ranch; it was very difficult to leave the ranch back home. But everybody knew of her gift with horses; but her gift alone hadn't gotten her where she was. Hard work, she had worked so hard, that there was no doubt it was her passion. How others could benefit from her knowledge! Yes, this was all well with her, an Instructor position; so long as she could get the ranch.
Tanaya undid the leadropes, tied to the trailer, and opened the back gate. The bar slammed back and caught her finger.
"Aw hell!" She winced and sucked her forefinger. The bloodblister was already painfully obvious. She ignored it; her hands were always marred by some injury or another. It wasn't that she was self destructive, things just happened on the ranch; barbed wire cut you up while fixin fence. Or a horse jerked the leadrope against a fence. Things happened, she was used to it.
Ignoring the sharp throb, she carefully backed out first RJ; his feet rythmically thudded on the trailer flooring. When he stepped out, she smiled; he was her perfect fella. Tall and strong, he was handsome in the most superior way. Gentle and laid back, cowy as all get out, she couldn't count the number of loving comments she had recieved.
Next backed out Rev. His blue coat shone in the sunlight, his dark head held high, nostrils quivering; he was certainly different from RJ. Where the dun was built more compact, Rev was tall and could darn sure haul butt 'cross a flat. Where RJ was calm, laid back and easy going, the younger horse was full of energy, skittish and easily spooked. Two horses on opposite ends of the spectrum.
"Alright boys, let's go check out your new home, hmmm?"
